Apple Set to Embrace USB-C in Upcoming iPhone 15 Models
Apple Inc. is reportedly poised to transition its iconic iPhone charging system from the Lightning port to USB-C with the forthcoming iPhone 15, according to reports from CNN Business and other reliable sources. This move marks a significant departure from Apple’s long-standing reliance on the Lightning connector, which has been a fixture of the iPhone since 2012.
While Apple has yet to officially confirm the change, multiple sources suggest that all models of the iPhone 15 will adopt the USB-C format, aligning them with other Apple devices such as MacBooks and iPads that have already embraced the universal port.
The USB-C port has become increasingly prevalent in the tech industry and is widely used by numerous manufacturers. In a landmark decision in late 2022, the European Union’s parliament passed legislation mandating the incorporation of USB-C charging ports for “all mobile phones, tablets, and cameras sold in the EU.” Companies operating within the EU must comply with this regulation by the end of 2024. Additionally, the USB-C requirement will extend to laptops in the EU by 2026.
The timing of this potential shift in Apple’s iPhone charging technology coincides with the company’s highly anticipated “Wonderlust” event scheduled for September 12, where many industry experts and Apple enthusiasts expect the iPhone 15 to make its official debut. iPhones continue to play a pivotal role in Apple’s financial success, with the devices generating a substantial $156.78 billion in net sales over the first three quarters of the company’s fiscal year 2023, despite a modest 3.7% decline compared to the same period in 2022 when Apple reported $162.86 billion in net sales.
Apple’s most recent earnings report for the third quarter, released in early August, revealed $39.67 billion in net sales from its iPhone segment, reflecting a 2.4% decrease compared to the previous year. CFO Lucas Maestri expressed optimism for a rebound in the fourth quarter, stating that Apple anticipates an acceleration in year-over-year performance for both the iPhone and Services segments.
In addition to the potential unveiling of the iPhone 15, there is speculation that Apple may introduce the ninth series of the Apple Watch at the “Wonderlust” event, further enhancing the excitement surrounding the upcoming event.
As Apple prepares to embrace the USB-C standard for its flagship smartphones, consumers and industry observers alike will be closely watching the company’s next moves and eagerly awaiting more details about the iPhone 15 and any other surprises Apple may have in store for its loyal fanbase.
