Biden Targets Chinese Auto Tech in “National Security” Crackdown
In an attempt to fortify U.S. made cars and electric vehicles, New regulations were introduced on Thursday to prevent sales or imports of any cars that have Chinese software imbedded in them. These regulations would effectively ban China from exporting its cars to the U.S. as the White House claims Chinese technology is a threat to American interests and going as far as to say it’s a danger to national security.
The administration’s concerns are based on a statement the White House made where it warned of the dangers posed by Chinese-made software and hardware in vehicles, citing risks of “sabotage and surveillance.” Picture a car remotely disabled on a U.S. highway at the flick of a switch from Beijing. That’s the nightmare scenario driving this move but it’s just theoretical as of now.
As tensions between the U.S. and China simmer, this proposal underscores Washington’s determination to stop Chinese influence over American consumers by any means necessary. Whether it be through social media on platforms like TikTok or through the cars they purchase.
