OpenAI Raises Concerns Over Potential ChatGPT Dependence

OpenAI has voiced concerns that its latest innovation—ChatGPT’s human-like voice mode—might lead users to rely too much on the AI for companionship. This worry surfaced in a safety report released Thursday, following the rollout of the new feature to paid users last week.

ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode is designed to mimic human conversation with striking realism. It responds in real time, handles interruptions smoothly, and even adds natural conversational sounds like laughter or “hmms.” The AI can also interpret and react to the emotional tone of a speaker’s voice, making interactions feel more authentic and human.

However, OpenAI is cautious that these lifelike interactions could foster emotional dependence on the AI, potentially at the expense of real-world human relationships similarly to what takes place in the hit Joaquin Phoenix movie “Here” where humans are seen forming relationships with AI chatbots. As the technology continues to evolve, OpenAI emphasizes the importance of monitoring and addressing these potential risks.
