Record Number of Americans Opt for Road Trips as Airlines Struggle During Independence Day Travel
AAA reports that this year, a record-breaking number of Americans are choosing to travel to their Independence Day destinations by car. With falling gas prices and the appeal of the open road, AAA anticipates that 43.2 million Americans will hit the nation’s freeways in the days surrounding July 4, surpassing the previous high of 41.5 million in 2019.
The decrease in gas prices has played a significant role in this surge in road travel. The national average cost of a gallon of gas currently stands at $3.49, marking a considerable drop from last year’s record high of $5.04. According to GasBuddy, motorists are expected to collectively save $2.6 billion on gas between June 30 and July 5 compared to the same period last year, thanks to the lower prices.
However, as more Americans hit the road, airlines are facing significant challenges and leaving thousands of travelers stranded during this peak holiday week. The holiday travel season began last Wednesday afternoon with severe storms impacting the East Coast. Over 4,000 flights within, into, or out of the U.S. experienced disruptions, as airlines struggled to recover from the weather-related setbacks.
United Airlines’ CEO, Scott Kirby, issued an apology after facing criticism for flying on a private jet during the airline’s flight disruptions. Kirby acknowledged the insensitivity of his decision, stating, “Taking a private jet was the wrong decision because it was insensitive to our customers who were waiting to get home.” He further expressed sincere apologies to customers and team members who have been working tirelessly, often in severe weather conditions, to assist passengers.
Southwest Airlines also faced similar challenges during the winter holidays when thousands of flights had to be canceled due to weather and staffing issues caused by outdated scheduling systems. These incidents highlight the need for airlines to invest in modernized infrastructure and processes to minimize disruptions during critical travel periods.
While road travel takes the spotlight this Independence Day, airlines are striving to address the issues faced and improve the overall travel experience. As more Americans hit the highways, it is essential to prioritize safety, adhere to traffic rules, and exercise caution during this busy travel period.
