Users Gain Control Over Threads: Opt-Out Feature for Instagram and Facebook Integration

Threads users are celebrating the newfound ability to opt out of having their posts displayed on Instagram and Facebook. Meta, the parent company overseeing these social media platforms, has introduced a feature allowing Threads users to control the visibility of their posts on other Meta-owned apps.

To exercise this option, Threads users can navigate to the app’s settings by tapping the two lines in the top right corner, then proceed to Privacy and select “Suggesting posts on other apps.” Here, users are presented with two switches that enable them to turn off suggestions for both Instagram and Facebook. It offers a granular level of control, empowering users to manage the reach of their Threads content beyond the dedicated app.

Meta, known for its cautious approach to feature rollouts, typically introduces new functionalities gradually. Therefore, users who do not yet see these toggles are advised to be patient, as the updates may take some time to reach all users.

The opt-out feature was designed to address user concerns about posts from Threads appearing on Instagram and Facebook without explicit consent. Meta, acknowledging the grumblings of users, responded in October by stating that it was actively “listening to feedback.” The recent testing and implementation of the opt-out switch underscore Meta’s commitment to user satisfaction and privacy considerations.

Originally conceived to boost engagement on Threads, the feature comes as a strategic move to revitalize the platform, which experienced a dip in momentum after its initial impressive launch. The positive impact of these updates is evident, with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reporting on an earnings call last month that Threads has now garnered almost 100 million monthly users. While still trailing behind other social media giants, such as Elon Musk’s claim of over half a billion monthly users for X, this milestone signifies a promising trajectory for Threads, just over four months into its existence.

Looking ahead, there are hints of more significant changes on the horizon for the Threads app. Alessandro Paluzzi, a software engineer known for uncovering features before official releases, shared a screenshot suggesting that Meta might be gearing up to extend the platform to European users. Meta has been cautious about launching Threads in Europe due to compliance considerations with the Digital Markets Act, which governs the handling of cross-platform data in the region. The potential expansion to the EU indicates Meta’s ongoing efforts to navigate regulatory landscapes while expanding the reach of its social media offerings.
