Armenia Appeals to US for Intervention as Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict Escalates

Armenia’s ambassador-at-large, Edmon Marukyan, has made a fervent appeal to the United States, calling on the nation to intervene in the renewed outbreak of hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Marukyan’s plea came as tensions escalated between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with fears of another devastating conflict looming over the region.

In a statement posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), Ambassador Marukyan expressed his deep concern over Azerbaijan’s recent military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh. He asserted, “Now, Azerbaijan has started a large-scale aggression and military operation against the peaceful people of Nagorno-Karabakh. It is the US’s turn now as to what measures will be used to stop the aggression and military attack on the trapped and starving people.”

Marukyan further extended his appeal to world leaders, urging US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and European Union leaders to condemn Baku’s actions in the strongest possible terms.

The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh has been tense for decades, with sporadic outbreaks of violence occurring over the years. However, Baku’s announcement of a “counterterrorism” operation in the region on Tuesday marked a concerning escalation. Nagorno-Karabakh, primarily inhabited by ethnic Armenians, declared independence from Azerbaijan in 1988 and has received steadfast support from Yerevan ever since.

The conflict reached its zenith in 2020, with a 44-day war resulting in significant territorial gains for Azerbaijan. The 2020 hostilities concluded with a ceasefire agreement brokered by Moscow, which included the deployment of Russian peacekeepers to maintain stability in the area.

In response to Ambassador Marukyan’s plea, the Kremlin issued a statement urging both Armenia and Azerbaijan to respect the 2020 ceasefire agreement. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesman, emphasized the importance of adhering to a concrete legal framework to facilitate a peaceful resolution. “There shouldn’t be any turns,” Peskov stated. “There should be concrete efforts based on a real and tangible legal framework, which provides an opportunity to bring about a peaceful settlement.”

The renewed tensions in Nagorno-Karabakh are raising concerns internationally, particularly given the geographical proximity to Russia’s southern borders. The potential for another large-scale conflict in the region remains a subject of global apprehension, with diplomatic efforts underway to prevent further escalation.

As the international community closely monitors the situation, the appeal for US intervention by Ambassador Edmon Marukyan underscores the urgency of the matter. The world now watches with bated breath as efforts continue to prevent a full-scale resurgence of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh, hoping for a peaceful resolution to a long-standing conflict that has brought untold suffering to the people of the region.
