Ukrainian President Criticizes U.S. for Fueling Panic Over War
Speaking to foreign media in the capital city of Kyiv on Friday, President Zelenskiy voiced his appreciation for U.S. support but emphasized his unique perspective as Ukraine’s president. He argued that he possesses deeper knowledge and understanding of the situation than any other world leader. He stated, “I am the president of Ukraine, I am here and I know more details and I have deeper knowledge than any other president.”
Zelenskiy’s comments came in response to recent warnings from the U.S., particularly during a phone call between U.S. President Joe Biden and Zelenskiy on Thursday night.
While acknowledging the possibility of escalation, Zelenskiy also pointed out that Ukraine has been living with this threat for years, with a portion of its territories already under Russian occupation.
Tensions have also spilled over to diplomatic circles, as Ukrainian officials objected to the U.S. advising families of embassy employees in Ukraine to leave the country. President Zelenskiy called this move “a mistake” and criticized it as an overreaction, saying, “It is not the Titanic here.”
The White House has sought to clarify its position, stating that despite the departure of American family members of embassy personnel, the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv remains open and fully operational.
Economic aid to Ukraine has become an increasingly pressing concern. President Zelenskiy has stated that Ukraine requires as much as $5 billion to stabilize its economy. The Ukrainian hryvnia has experienced an 8.4% drop against the dollar since November, making it one of the worst-performing currencies globally. This economic instability has been exacerbated by Russia’s military buildup on the border.
In response to these economic challenges, the White House noted that President Biden informed Zelenskiy of the U.S.’s exploration of additional macroeconomic support to help Ukraine’s economy.
